Tbilisi houses many unique and wonderful attractions, but in order to get the full experience of Georgia, we recommend visiting various places that are 1-2 hours-away from the capital:
The former capital of Georgia, that has some magnificent architecture of medieval times. Mtskheta resides at the crossing of two rivers: Mtkvari and Aragvi. One of It’s most important monuments, is Samtavro, the crypt of the first christian king of Georgia, Mirian. Another significant site, is Svetitskhoveli; a cathedral built in 11th century, comes with a dramatic story of it’s builder Arsukidze, whose hand got cut off in order to prevent him from building any other monument of such beauty. According to legend, Svetitskhoveli was built on the site of another church from the IV century, and it is one of the masterpieces of the early middle ages, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the burial site of the Christ’s mantle, Svetitskhoveli is one of the most sacred places in Georgia. On top of a hill, above the river, you will see one of the oldest Georgian churches - Jvari. This old complex contains several buildings from different periods and dates back to 6th century. There are beautiful views from here and there is much to see. A taxi from Tbilisi costs 20 Lari, but you can also catch Marshrutka which is considerably cheaper.
Davit Gareji Monastery
Davit Gareji lies at the far-east side of the country, on the border with Azerbaijan. The Complex is a great destination for a one-day trip. It is a remote, partially deserted landscape of grasslands which bloom with flowers in summer. There are two important monasteries with beautiful frescoes: Lavra and Udabno. The walk to the top of the hill, where Udabno is located, is quite a challenge, but you are rewarded with breathtaking views. To get to Davit Gareji, you can use the same means of transportation as before: Taxi or a cheaper alternative - Marshrutka.
